Charlie Hebdo: Listen to extraordinary moment terrorists speak to TV journalist during terrifying hostage siege
This is the extraordinary moment two terrorists involved in today’s French hostage siege dramas spoke to a French TV journalist.
French TV station BFMTV spoke to Chérif Kouachi – suspected of being behind the Charlie Hebdo magazine attack – and Amedy Coulibaly, who was holding people hostage at a Paris grocery store.
Journalist Igor Sahiri spoke to Kouachi at about 9:45am, while he held a man hostage in a printing press with his brother.
The terror suspect, who was killed when police raided the printing press this afternoon, said: “We are the defenders of the prophet” and that he was sent by “Al Qaida of Yemen”.
Amedy Coulibaly, the terrorist who held people hostage at a grocery store, also spoke to the station and said he had “synchronised” himself with the Charlie Hebdo killers.
He also confirmed he had shot a policewoman in the south of the city the previous day.
“Them Charlie Hebdo; me the police,” he said, adding that he was part of the Islamic State network.
On Twitter, Igor Sahiri, the BFMTV journalist who talked to Chérif Kouachi, said the phone call happened at 9:45am.
Le Monde said the journalist first talked to Chérif and then at 3pm Coulibaly contacted the French TV station. He said he wanted to get in touch with the police.
The siege at the grocery store ended with explosions with the gunman confirmed dead.
Hostages were seen rushing away from the shop, with four feared to have been killed. The Charlie Hebdo gunmen were killed in a simultaneous raid on a printworks.
BFMTV did not broadcast the conversations until the sieges ended.
TRANSLATION OF CALLS
Kouachi: “We are just telling you we are the defenders of the prophet and that I Chérif Kouachi have been sent by Al Qaida of Yemen and that I went over there and that Anwar Al Awaki financed me.
Journalist: “And that was how long ago, approximately?”
Kouachi: “Er.. it was a while ago, before he was killed.”
At 3pm the TV station received a call from Amedy Coulibaly who was holding people hostage at the Paris grocery store.
Journalist: “Are you linked with the two brothers who did the shooting at Charlie Hebdo?
Amedy: “We synchronised to do the operations.”
Journalist: “Are you still in contact with them? Have you spoken on the phone to them? ”
Journalist: “How did you synchronise? Do you have other events planned? Do you have a scenario that you are following? ”
Amedy: “No, we just decided at the start, so they did Charlie Hebdo and I took care of police officers.”
