Army Chief sues two newspapers

Commander of the Army, Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, filed action against two prominent Jaffna newspapers yesterday, on the charge of publishing defamatory remarks against him.


Brigadier Ranjith Rajapathirana said, “Just as much the army is not above the law, we are not below the law either. We will fight vigorously to protect the good name of the army and our heroic soldiers.”


The two newspapers, Uthayan and Valampuri had on 7 November, published articles that were allegedly defamatory of the Army Commander. Lt. Gen. Jayasuriya has demanded Rs 100 million in damages.


The complainant charged the two newspapers of publishing articles which were harmful to the image of the Army, making references to the locations of Army camps around Jaffna, which had no connection whatsoever to the story being published.


The two cases are to be called on 21 January 2013in the District Court of Jaffna.
